What is HASAF?

HASAF Is an app that will alert and teach users what to do in the event of a natural disaster. Hasaf users will not only learn how to prepare for future natural disasters but will also receive alerts and news following a disaster event.

My Project Focus

My main focus for this project was to create an interaction design and visual design. My responsibilities were to create user research, wireframes and interactive prototype using Figma along with my research findings and usability testing results. In addition to being the designer, I was also the project manager making sure the project was going according to plan.

Problem Statement

Repeated natural disasters in Haiti have highlighted the need for adequate emergency preparedness as well as the lack of information in the aftermath of an emergency event. In short, people need to be able to prepare for future disaster events, and affected communities need a reliable source of information in the wake of a disaster. With an App like Hasaf the people will be able to have some peace of mind.

User Research

Summary

During my research I found out that most people want an easy way to stay informed, and to stay in to contact their loved one in case of a natural disaster. They also want to know where to go to seek help, and where they can volunteer after a natural disaster. Lastly people in third world countries do not have the technological advances to be up to date on natural disaster as they occured.

Design

Setback + New Direction

When I began the process of user testing, I came to the discovery that majority of the Haitian population did not have an email address. As a result , I went back to modify my login and sign up process from email to phone number and pin.

Accessibility

  • Bold text

  • Visual illustration

  • Language option

  • Large icons

Conclusion & Lessons Learn

What would I do different

Going forward, I would do various type of user research. For this project my research option was limited to phone interview due to the users being in a different country.

What I learned

As I designed and tested, one of the most challenging factors was the fact the users were living in a different country, therefore it was also challenging picking the users for interviewing and testing. It was also due to the fact that a lot of people in Haiti donโ€™t know how to read and write. As a result I had the used bold text, large font and use a lot of illustrations.

Future Road Map

  • More user research

  • Audio text reader

  • Video illustration
